Why are threshold options important to consider when specifying a door for a customer?
Every exterior door threshold plays a part in weatherproofing a property, and security and durability should be key priorities when ensuring an external door is ideal for a property. A front door threshold will create a secure seal when the doors are closed, ensuring maximum safety and weather protection.
Thresholds can also contribute to the appearance, finish and weather tightness of a door. For example – a lower, subtle threshold can more seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces to create a sense of continuity and openness. A low threshold can also lower the risk of tripping when stepping through the doorway – increasing user safety, particularly for homeowners with mobility issues.
When advising your customers on front door threshold options – you need to explain the benefits of achieving the appropriate level of weather protection, as well as mobility and cosmetic requirements.

Origin Front Door threshold options
Non-weathered thresholds
Our non-weathered thresholds are just 50mm high, which allows them to provide a flush walkway between rooms. However, they do not provide the same level of weather protection as the weathered option.

Weathered thresholds
Our weathered thresholds are designed to offer exceptional rates of weather protection, and they are ideal if the door will not be in a porch or sheltered from extreme weather. You should advise customers that this option will allow their home to stay watertight and protected from adverse weather conditions.
Mobility thresholds
Our mobility thresholds are just 20mm high and can provide optimum accessibility to wheelchair users or those who use walking aids. When helping a customer choose the right option, you need to provide advice on accessibility and take into account the different designs and weather protection.

Advising customers on threshold options
Weathered thresholds are the most popular front door threshold option, as they provide optimal protection against wind and rain. Weather protection tends to be a priority for most homeowners; however, you should consider a variety of factors when helping them specify the right threshold option:
Will the door be located in a porch?
If the area around the front door is sheltered and wind and rain rarely drive straight towards the doors, the non-weathered low threshold may be suitable.
Does the customer have specific mobility requirements?
If accessibility is a priority for your customers, the mobility threshold is likely to be the right choice. If someone living in the property, or a frequent visitor to the property, uses a wheelchair or walking aid, accessibility will probably be prioritised over weatherproofing. Similarly, if anyone who will frequently be using the door has mobility or balance problems that put them at increased risk of falling or tripping, the mobility metal threshold could be a great choice.
What are the customer’s priorities?
If aesthetics are deemed very important to your customers, the non-weathered threshold might be a preferable option. This will give customers a completely flush transition through the doors, but it should be made clear that full weather protection will not be guaranteed in extreme weather.
