Garage doors come in a range of sizes, and if you’re a tradesperson looking to supply garage doors, it’s important that you’re aware of how to specify the right sized door. This is vital for advising your customers on their choices.

In this guide, we give you an overview of the various sizes and configurations available when supplying Origin Garage Doors. We also explain how to determine what size garage doors are needed for a project.

Factors to consider when sizing a garage door

When sizing a garage door for a customer, you should consider the following factors:

Size of the opening and mechanisms available

The space inside, outside, and surrounding a garage door will impact your customers’ options when considering opening mechanisms. If there isn’t much garage space for a door to swing outwards or inwards, options will be more limited. Origin Garage Doors can swing either internally or externally, so it is important to check which mechanism is ideal for your customer’s garage door.

Panel size

Origin Garage Door panels are available in the same designs as the Origin Front Door, and each individual panel design has its minimum and maximum sizes.

Leave room for the door and fixing frame

While framings are not challenging, it’s important to leave tolerances for the width and height of the door for the jambs, threshold (if specified) and top track.

How do you know what size garage doors are required for a project?

Tradespeople should measure up a new garage door for their customers to determine the size that they require.

Here is our step-by-step guide for measuring a garage door correctly:

  • Step 1: Measure the opening (width) of the garage door at the widest point.
  • Step 2: Measure the opening (height) of the garage door at the highest point.
  • Step 3: Measure the width of all the areas next to the openings.
  • Step 4: Measure the area between the ceiling and the top of the door opening.
  • Step 5: Measure the distance from the garage opening to the nearest obstruction.

Origin Garage Door sizes

The Origin Garage Door is designed in a French Door configuration, and is available in all of the same panel designs as the Origin Front Door, so your customers can create consistency in their home style. Your customers can open both doors to get their car out, however, they are also able to open one single door at a time. The individual panels have their own minimum and maximum sizes (see our online quoting and ordering system, OSS, for details). To give an idea on sizing, for a French Door with no panel (just glass), Origin can supply a door with a maximum height of 3000mm and maximum width of 2400mm. Origin Garage Doors can be tailored and custom-made to fit bespoke specifications. This is not only in terms of size but in terms of other factors too such as:

  • Colour: From brown and black to grey and white, Origin offers a range of garage door colours for you to choose from. Over 150 different RAL colours are available. Some garage doors can even be dual colour, so while the external colour can complement the building, the interior colours can contrast or blend in with the colour palettes inside the garage.
  • Design: There are ten unique panel designs to choose from, ranging from classic styles to ultra-modern aluminium panels. Customers can choose a design that is suitable for them from the Sandringham and Kensington range of panels.
  • Garage door opening options: Origin Garage Doors can open inwards or outwards.
  • Handles: Customers can choose from a range of stainless steel and aluminium handles.
